BiodiverCity

biodivercity-book.jpg

This project was about visualising scientific data from a recent urban ecology and sociology survey. BiodiverCity is a research project that involves scientists and researchers from the University of Berne, the Research Group for Urban Ecology, Wildlife and Communication in Switzerland, the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL among others. The aim was to display the research results in an interesting and accessible way to the citizens. Together with Angela Gebenroth (Interaction Design, Zurich) I designed 3D installations that—placed in urban green spaces—raise awareness, inform and increase attractivity of biodiversity in urban spaces.

The documentation shown here was produced as a 52 page perfect bound booklet and can be viewed online as both PDF file and Flash page flip application. To present the project to the department of design at the Zurich University of the Arts, we also created a short video sequence. The whole process of is also documented in this Blog post.

Foetus Set

Wednesday, 15th November 2006

This piece shows six ‘chess pieces’ that represent the different stages in foetal development up to three months gestation, which is the time span in which most abortions in Britain are carried out. The brief for this ‘Design & Applied Arts’ project was to identify various hierarchies and to visualise them in a three-dimensional chess set.

I always wanted my own thinking chair—a place to sit down, relax and think up new great ideas. So I made one! Could there be any shape that bears any more inspiration, a letterform that carries any more creative potential than a question mark? Hardly. So here it is, my final piece in product design—a thinking chair with type influences.
